Begonia dregei
Begonia dregei
Begonia dregei, commonly known as Dwarf Maple Leaf Begonia or Maple Leaf Begonia, is a unique and attractive species of Begonia native to South Africa. It is a popular choice among plant enthusiasts for its distinctive, maple-like leaves and its intriguing caudex, which adds to its ornamental appeal.
One of the most distinctive features of Begonia dregei is its caudex, a swollen stem base that can store water. The caudex becomes more pronounced as the plant matures, giving it a bonsai-like appearance.
The plant produces small, white or pinkish flowers. While the flowers are relatively modest compared to the foliage, they add a charming touch to the plant when in bloom.
Cultivation:
- Soil: Prefers well-draining, slightly acidic to neutral soil. A mix of peat, perlite, and potting soil works well.
- Watering: Water moderately, allowing the top inch of soil to dry out between waterings. Overwatering can lead to root rot, especially if the plant is in a poorly draining soil mix.
- Sunlight: Thrives in bright, indirect light. Direct sunlight can scorch the leaves, while low light can reduce its vigor and leaf coloration.
